What Is an M.2 2280 SSD?
An M.2 2280 SSD is a solid-state drive built in the M.2 form factor measuring 22 mm wide by 80 mm long. The number "2280" is purely a physical dimension code: the first two digits indicate the 22 mm width (shared by every M.2 drive), and the last two digits indicate the 80 mm length. This is the most widely used M.2 size in modern desktops, laptops, mini PCs and industrial computers, and it is available in capacities ranging from around 120 GB up to 8 TB.
Interface: SATA or PCIe NVMe
The 2280 size tells you how big the drive is, but not how fast it goes — that depends on the interface. An M.2 2280 slot may accept either a SATA drive (capped at roughly 600 MB/s by the SATA III link) or a PCIe NVMe drive, which starts above 2,000 MB/s and scales with the PCIe generation. PCIe Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives roughly double in bandwidth with each step, with top Gen 5 models reaching into the 14,000 MB/s range. Many 2280 slots are "keyed" for one protocol only (B-key for SATA, M-key for NVMe), so it is essential to confirm which interface a host system supports before choosing a drive.
| Form Factor | Width | Length | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| M.2 2230 | 22 mm | 30 mm | Handhelds, ultra-thin tablets |
| M.2 2242 | 22 mm | 42 mm | Compact laptops, some embedded boards |
| M.2 2280 | 22 mm | 80 mm | Desktops, laptops, mini PCs, industrial systems |
Compatibility: Length Matters More Than You Think
All M.2 form factors share the same 22 mm width and the same edge connector, but they are not interchangeable — a host only accepts the specific lengths its mounting standoff and slot support. A 2280 drive will not physically fit a 2230-only socket, and a 2230 drive will not reach the mounting screw in a 2280 slot without an adapter. Because 2280 is the desktop and mini-PC standard, it offers the widest choice of capacities, controller options and price points, which is why most system builders standardise on it.
Why 2280 Is the Default Choice
For system integrators and industrial deployments, the 2280 form factor delivers the best combination of capacity headroom, thermal mass and supply availability. A longer PCB allows more NAND packages and larger heatsinks, so 2280 drives handle sustained workloads and higher ambient temperatures better than shorter alternatives. Many enterprise-grade 2280 NVMe drives also include configurable thermal throttling, which adjusts performance to protect data integrity in hot or poorly ventilated enclosures — an important consideration for fanless and industrial systems.
Use Cases and Applications
M.2 2280 SSDs are used across digital signage players, point-of-sale terminals, thin clients, kiosk PCs, medical devices, factory-floor industrial computers and general office desktops. In fanless mini PCs, a 2280 NVMe drive provides fast boot times and quiet, vibration-tolerant storage with no moving parts — ideal for dusty, hot or continuously running environments. Capacity is typically selected by workload: 128–256 GB for thin clients and kiosks, 512 GB for general office and signage, and 1 TB or more for local caching, video recording or database workloads.
Thinvent Products Featuring M.2 2280 Storage
Thinvent's mini PCs, thin clients, industrial computers and all-in-one PCs are engineered around the M.2 2280 standard, making storage selection simple and future-proof. Our Aero and industrial platforms accept 2280 NVMe or SATA drives, allowing customers to scale from 128 GB up to 1 TB and beyond without changing the chassis. Combined with fanless cooling and wide-temperature designs, Thinvent systems keep running reliably in signage, retail, healthcare and factory environments — with the flexibility to specify the exact processor, memory, operating system and storage your deployment needs.
