240V - 240V Industrial PCs: Wide-Input Power for Global Deployments

What Does "240V" Mean for an Industrial Computer?

A 240V rating on an industrial computer describes the AC mains voltage the system's power supply is designed to accept. Worldwide, mains voltage falls into two broad bands: 100–120V (North America, Japan, parts of South America) and 220–240V (Europe, the UK, most of Asia, Africa, Australia and the Middle East). A 240V-capable industrial PC can therefore be deployed in most of the world's factories, plants and remote sites without a step-down transformer.

It is important to separate two things: the input voltage range of the power supply, and the DC output that actually feeds the motherboard. Many industrial PCs accept a wide AC input (commonly 100–240V AC, 50/60 Hz) and convert it to a low DC rail such as 12V, which is then delivered either internally or through an external adapter. Systems built around a 12V DC input can also run from a 240V AC source when paired with an appropriate 100–240V AC to 12V DC adapter.

Wide-Input vs. Fixed-Input Power Supplies

Power Supply Type Typical Input Deployment Flexibility Notes
Fixed 110V 100–120V AC Limited to low-voltage regions Requires transformer elsewhere
Fixed 230V 220–240V AC Limited to high-voltage regions Common in EU/Asia
Wide-input AC 100–240V AC, 50/60 Hz Global Simplest for multi-country rollouts
12V DC input + AC adapter 100–240V AC adapter → 12V DC Global Adapter can be swapped by region

Wide-input supplies are the preferred choice for OEMs and system integrators who ship the same machine to multiple countries, because a single SKU covers both voltage bands and only the mains cord set changes.

Why Voltage Flexibility Matters in the Field

Industrial environments are rarely clean when it comes to power. Long cable runs, shared machinery circuits and generator-backed supplies can all cause the mains voltage to sag or surge. A power supply with a genuinely wide input window tolerates these variations far better than a narrow-band unit, reducing nuisance shutdowns and protecting the internal DC rails. Additions such as surge protection, fused inputs and reverse-polarity protection on DC-input models further harden the system against real-world electrical conditions.

Applications That Depend on 240V Operation

  • Factory floor and SCADA terminals in Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, where 230/240V is the standard mains supply.

  • Kiosks and self-service terminals installed across multiple regions from a single hardware platform.

  • Telecom and network cabinets running from 240V AC rack feeds.

  • Building automation and access control panels wired into 240V lighting and power circuits.

  • Machine vision and inspection stations where a stable supply protects camera and I/O timing.
