What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer engineered for continuous operation in environments where consumer-grade hardware would quickly fail — factory floors, outdoor cabinets, vehicles, kiosks and control rooms. Unlike an office desktop, an industrial computer is built around three priorities: thermal resilience, mechanical durability and long-term availability of identical units for multi-year deployments.
The defining design choice is usually cooling. A fanless industrial PC uses the chassis itself as a heatsink, so there are no moving parts to draw in dust, no bearings to wear out and no airflow path for conductive particles. This makes fanless systems suitable for dusty production areas, humid plant rooms and sealed enclosures where filtered air is not available. Where a fan is required for higher thermal loads, industrial designs use field-replaceable, ball-bearing fans rather than soldered consumer blowers.
Key Specifications to Evaluate
When specifying an industrial computer, the processor, memory and storage configuration determines which workloads it can handle, while the I/O and power design determines whether it can actually be installed on site.
| Specification | Typical Industrial Range | What It Affects |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel® Core™ i3 / i5, Celeron®, N-series | Deterministic response, number of concurrent tasks |
| Cores / Threads | 4 to 12 cores | Multi-application and virtualisation headroom |
| Memory | 4 GB to 64 GB DDR4/DDR5 | Database size, browser and SCADA sessions |
| Storage | 128 GB to 1 TB SSD | OS, logging, image and video buffering |
| Serial Ports | 1 to 4× DB9 RS-232/RS-485 | PLCs, meters, weighbridges, legacy machinery |
| Ethernet | Dual Gigabit | Network redundancy, OT/IT separation |
| Power Input | 12 V or 9–36 V DC | Vehicle, solar and DIN-rail supplies |
| Mounting | VESA, DIN rail, wall bracket | Cabinet and machine integration |
A modern example is the Intel® Core™ i3-1215U: a 6-core, 12th-generation processor with a max frequency up to 4.4 GHz and 10 MB of cache. It offers enough performance for multi-window SCADA, local analytics and edge gateway duties while remaining within the thermal envelope of a compact fanless chassis. Paired with 16 GB of DDR4 and a 1 TB SSD, this class of machine comfortably runs Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT, Linux or
