What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computer engineered for continuous operation in environments where a standard desktop or office mini PC would quickly fail. Instead of being optimised for size or aesthetics alone, an IPC is designed around a different set of priorities: wide operating temperature range, tolerance of dust and vibration, protection against electrical noise, and the ability to run unattended for years at a time. That usually means a fanless chassis machined from aluminium, wide-voltage DC input (commonly 12V or 9–36V), watchdog timers, and long-lifecycle components that stay in production long after consumer parts are retired.
Because the same board is often deployed across a factory floor, a retail chain, or a fleet of kiosks, industrial PCs also tend to standardise on legacy-friendly I/O. RS-232/RS-485 serial ports, digital I/O, dual Gigabit Ethernet, and multiple display outputs are far more common here than on consumer machines. This is what makes an IPC the natural choice for machine control, data acquisition, digital signage, and edge computing, where the computer has to talk to real hardware rather than just to a user.
