Understanding the B&R X20 PLC System
The B&R X20 System is a slice-based I/O and control platform from B&R Industrial Automation (Austria). It is designed as a modular architecture where controllers, I/O slices, power supply modules and communication modules clip together on a DIN rail, so a system can be scaled from a handful of I/O points to hundreds. The official X20 System documentation, user manuals and downloads are published by B&R on their own site (br-automation.com), and PDF copies of the X20 user manual are also mirrored on manual hosting sites such as ManualsLib and Manualzz.
Programming Environment and Engineering Workflow
X20 controllers are engineered in B&R's own development environment, Automation Studio, with the runtime running on the company's Automation Runtime operating system. Programs are typically written in the IEC 61131-3 languages (structured text, ladder diagram, function block diagram, sequential function chart, instruction list), and the platform also supports C and C++ for more demanding tasks. Because the X20 is a vendor-specific ecosystem, programming, diagnostics and firmware updates are all handled inside B&R's toolchain rather than on a general-purpose operating system.
Where a Standard Industrial PC Fits
In most X20-based machines, the automation controller handles deterministic control while a separate industrial computer handles the "above the controller" layer: SCADA/HMI visualisation, data logging, recipe management, MES or ERP connectors, vision processing, database and reporting, and remote access. That industrial PC needs to run standard Windows or Linux software, sit in the same control cabinet, tolerate the same temperature and vibration, and communicate with the PLC over Ethernet (Modbus TCP, OPC UA, EtherNet/IP) or serial (RS-232/RS-485 via DB9).
| Requirement | Typical B&R X20 Controller | Companion Industrial PC |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Deterministic machine control, I/O scanning | SCADA, HMI, data logging, MES/ERP gateway |
| Programming | Automation Studio, IEC 61131-3 | Standard Windows/Linux applications |
| Storage | Compact flash / onboard memory | 128 GB – 1 TB SSD |
| Connectivity | X2X, POWERLINK, Ethernet, I/O slices | Ethernet, HDMI, USB, serial DB9 |
| Mounting | DIN rail slice system | DIN rail, VESA or panel mount |
Selection Notes
When specifying a companion computer for an X20-controlled line, look at processor headroom (a 6-core Intel Core i3 such as the i3-1215U is ample for SCADA plus database work), 16 GB or more of RAM for multi-tab HMI and historian workloads, dual Gigabit Ethernet so the plant network and the machine network stay separate, and serial ports if legacy instruments must be polled. Operating system choice matters too: Windows 11 Professional or IoT for commercial HMI/SCADA packages, or an embedded Linux build where licensing and long-term stability are priorities.
Thinvent Industrial PCs for PLC and SCADA Layers
Thinvent manufactures fanless industrial PCs, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs built for exactly this role alongside PLC platforms such as the B&R X20. The IPC3 series pairs an Intel Core i3-1215U (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and up to 1 TB SSD, and is available with Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT Value, FreeDOS or Thinux Embedded Linux. Variants with quad DB9 serial ports make it straightforward to connect serial field devices, while dual Gigabit Ethernet and multiple HDMI outputs support segregated networks and dual-display operator stations. For lighter HMI-only duties, Thinvent's mini PC and thin client ranges offer lower-power Intel and ARM options in the same rugged, cabinet-friendly form factors.
