What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a computing platform engineered for continuous operation in environments where an office desktop or consumer mini PC would struggle — factory floors, control cabinets, kiosks, vehicles, warehouses and outdoor enclosures. The difference is not raw performance alone, but durability: wide-temperature components, passive (fanless) cooling, vibration-tolerant mounting, wide-range DC power input and a long-lifecycle supply of the identical model so that a fleet deployed today can be serviced and expanded years later.
Key Specifications and Technical Details
When specifying an industrial computer, the specification list differs meaningfully from a consumer machine. The table below summarises the parameters that usually decide whether a unit survives its environment.
| Parameter | Typical Industrial Requirement | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling | Fanless, aluminium heatsink chassis | No fan bearing to seize; no dust drawn into the enclosure |
| Processor | Intel Celeron, N-series, Core i3/i5 (7th–14th gen) | Balance of performance, power draw and long-term availability |
| Memory | 4–64 GB DDR4/DDR5 | Headroom for SCADA, vision or virtualised workloads |
| Storage | 128 GB – 1 TB SSD | Shock-tolerant, no moving parts |
| Operating Temperature | Extended range, e.g. 0–50 °C or wider | Cabinets and unairconditioned rooms run hot |
| Power Input | Wide-range DC (commonly 12 V, often 9–36 V) | Tolerates supply sag and vehicle/industrial rails |
| Serial I/O | RS-232/RS-485, multiple DB9 ports | PLCs, meters, scales, legacy controllers |
| Mounting | DIN rail, VESA, wall bracket | Fits inside existing panels |
| Networking | Dual Gigabit Ethernet | Separates plant network from enterprise network |
| Operating System | Windows 11 Pro/IoT, Linux, DOS, |
