What Is a Flat PC?

A flat PC is a compact, low-profile computer designed to sit flat on a desk, mount behind a display, or slot into a control panel or kiosk enclosure. Unlike a traditional tower, a flat PC packs the full functionality of a desktop — processor, memory, storage, networking and display output — into a slim chassis with a small footprint. The "flat" form factor is popular wherever space is tight: retail counters, reception desks, hospital workstations, factory floors and digital signage installations.

Because there are no expansion cards to accommodate, flat PCs are usually built around low-power mobile or embedded processors. That makes them quiet, energy-efficient and easy to cool. Many models are completely fanless, using the chassis itself as a heatsink, which removes the single most common point of failure in a small computer — the cooling fan — and eliminates the dust ingress that eventually clogs traditional desktops in dusty environments.

Key Specifications to Look For

When comparing flat PCs, the specification list is short but each item matters a great deal:

Specification Typical Options Why It Matters
Processor Intel® Celeron®, Intel® N-series, Intel® Core™ i3/i5 Determines multitasking headroom and app compatibility
Cores / Threads 4 to 12 cores More cores help with virtual desktops, browsing tabs and background services
Memory (RAM) 4 GB to 64 GB DDR4/DDR5 8 GB suits office work; 16 GB+ for VDI, analytics or many browser tabs
Storage 128 GB to 1024 GB SSD SSDs give fast boot and silent, shock-resistant operation
Display Output 1–2 × HDMI, VGA or DisplayPort Dual HDMI supports two screens without a dock
Networking Gigabit Ethernet, optional dual LAN Wired links are preferred for stable, secure deployments
Operating System Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu Linux, FreeDOS, without OS Choose per application and licensing requirements
Mounting VESA, DIN rail, panel or desk Determines how the unit fits into the physical space

An important practical consideration is power. Flat PCs generally run from an external 12 V or 19 V adapter, drawing far less electricity than a tower desktop. In deployments with hundreds of units — call centres, classrooms, branch offices — that difference shows up directly on the energy bill, and the reduced heat output means less load on building air conditioning.

Where Flat PCs Are Used

The flat form factor shines in fixed-location, always-on roles. Common deployments include point-of-sale terminals at retail counters, check-in and ticketing desks, patient intake stations in clinics, thin-client desktops in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments, and digital signage players mounted behind screens. In industrial settings, fanless flat PCs are used for machine monitoring, data logging and HMI (human-machine interface) applications where vibration, dust and wide temperature swings are normal.

Because they can be mounted out of sight — behind a monitor, under a counter, inside a cabinet — flat PCs also improve security and tidiness. There is no tower under the desk to kick, no cables trailing across the floor, and no fan noise in customer-facing areas. For organisations standardising on a single desktop image across many locations, a flat PC with a consistent chipset and operating system greatly simplifies imaging, patching and remote support.

Choosing Between Mini PC, Thin Client and Industrial Flat PC

These categories overlap, but the intended workload differs. A mini PC is a general-purpose flat computer that runs applications locally. A thin client is optimised to connect to a remote desktop session, so it needs less local processing power but strong, reliable networking. An industrial PC adds ruggedisation: wider operating temperature range, fanless cooling, protection against dust and electrical noise, and often legacy I/O such as serial ports for connecting to machinery. If your flat PC will live in an office, a mini PC or thin client is usually sufficient. If it will sit on a factory floor, choose an industrial model.

Thinvent's Flat PC Range

Thinvent manufactures flat, compact computers for office, retail and industrial use. The Aero Mini PC series delivers a slim, fanless design with Intel® processors, DDR4 memory, SSD storage and Windows or Linux operating system options — ideal as a space-saving desktop, kiosk controller or signage player. For virtual desktop rollouts, Thinvent thin clients provide the same low-profile footprint with management-friendly firmware. Where conditions are harsher, Thinvent industrial PCs and all-in-one flat panels bring fanless cooling, wide-temperature operation and panel-mount or VESA mounting to the same flat form factor.
