Invt Drive - Industrial PC & Mini PC Solutions for VFD & Drive Control

What Is an INVT Drive?

An INVT drive refers to a variable frequency drive (VFD) from INVT Electric, a manufacturer known for its Goodrive (GD) family of motor control products. These drives regulate the speed and torque of AC induction and permanent magnet synchronous motors by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. INVT's GD series spans a broad range: the GD200A general-purpose VFD covers a power range of roughly 0.75 kW to 3000 kW, while the GD20 series uses sensorless vector control technology for improved drive and control performance, and the GD350-01H targets high-speed permanent magnet synchronous motor applications.

How VFDs Are Used in Automation Systems

A VFD rarely operates in isolation. In most industrial installations it sits inside a control cabinet alongside a programmable logic controller (PLC), a human-machine interface (HMI), sensors, and a supervisory computer. The drive handles the power stage — converting fixed-frequency AC into a variable-frequency, variable-voltage output — while the logic layer decides what the motor should do. Configuration, parameter setting, fault logging, and remote monitoring are typically carried out from a PC or industrial computer connected over Ethernet, RS-485, or USB.

This is where the computing layer matters. Engineers need a reliable machine to run drive configuration software, SCADA dashboards, data logging, and gateway services. In dusty, hot, or space-constrained cabinets, a fanless industrial PC or mini PC is often a better fit than a desktop tower, because it has no moving cooling parts to clog with dust.

Typical Technical Requirements for Drive Control Computers

Requirement Why It Matters for VFD Applications
Fanless, ventless chassis Survives dust, humidity and vibration near motors and cabinets
Wide DC input (12V) Matches common control-cabinet power supplies
Dual Ethernet ports Separates the plant network from the drive/machine network
Serial or USB ports Connects to drive programming and Modbus RTU interfaces
Low power draw Reduces heat load inside sealed enclosures
Long-life SSD storage Withstands vibration better than spinning disks
24/7 duty rating Continuous operation alongside always-on drives

Operating systems matter too. Windows 11 Pro or Windows 11 IoT supports most vendor drive-configuration suites, while Ubuntu Linux 24.04 LTS and embedded Linux builds are popular for gateway, logging, and edge-computing roles where a lightweight, licence-free stack is preferred.

Use Cases and Applications

Drive-control computers are deployed across a wide range of automation scenarios: pump and fan control rooms, textile and printing lines, crane and hoist systems, air compressors, machine tools, and solar pump installations. Common roles include running parameter-setting software for VFD commissioning, hosting HMI/SCADA runtime, acting as a Modbus or OPC gateway between drives and a plant server, logging energy and fault data for predictive maintenance, and serving as an edge node that pre-processes drive telemetry before sending it to the cloud.

Thinvent Products for Drive and Automation Control

Thinvent manufactures fanless mini PCs, industrial computers, thin clients, and all-in-one PCs built for exactly these environments. Our Aero Mini PC family, for example, pairs Intel® processors such as the N5095A (4 cores, up to 2.9 GHz, 4 MB cache) with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 128 GB SSD storage in a compact, ventless chassis powered by a 12V adapter — well suited to cabinet mounting beside drives and PLCs. Options include Windows 11 IoT, Windows 11 Professional, DOS, and Thinux™ Embedded Linux, so you can match the operating system to your drive-configuration software or gateway stack. For larger control-room installations, our industrial PCs and all-in-one systems provide additional I/O, dual Ethernet, and panel-mount form factors.
