IOT Embedded Systems - IoT Embedded Systems: Industrial Computers & Edge PCs

What Are IoT Embedded Systems?

IoT embedded systems are dedicated computing platforms that collect data from sensors and machines, process it locally, and connect it to networks, cloud services or supervisory systems. Unlike general-purpose office PCs, they are built to run continuously, tolerate dust, vibration, wide temperature swings and unstable power, and to expose the physical interfaces that industrial equipment actually uses — serial ports, digital I/O, Ethernet and USB. In practice, the hardware layer of an IoT deployment is usually an industrial PC, an edge gateway or an embedded controller running a purpose-built operating system image.

Key Technical Requirements

An IoT embedded system is defined less by raw speed than by reliability and I/O. Important characteristics include:

  • Fanless, ventless cooling — no moving parts means no dust ingress and no fan failure, which is the most common cause of field computer downtime.

  • Wide-input DC power — typically 9–36V DC or a 12V adapter with protection against surges and brownouts.

  • Serial connectivity — RS-232/RS-485 DB9 ports for PLCs, meters, weighing scales, barcode scanners and legacy controllers.

  • Dual Ethernet — one port for the machine or OT network, one for the plant or IT network, enabling edge routing and network separation.

  • Long-life components — embedded processors and soldered-down or socketed memory chosen for multi-year availability.

  • OS choice — Windows 11 IoT, Windows 11 Pro, embedded Linux or a DOS/FreeDOS base for custom images.

Layer Typical Role Example Hardware
Sensor / device Generates data PLC, energy meter, RFID reader
Edge controller Collects, buffers, filters, runs logic Fanless industrial PC, embedded box PC
Gateway / network Protocol conversion, routing Dual-Ethernet industrial PC
Cloud / SCADA Storage, analytics, dashboards Server or hosted platform

Processors for Edge and Embedded Workloads

Modern edge workloads — protocol gateways, local databases, vision pre-processing, HMI software — benefit from efficient multi-core processors. Intel's 12th generation mobile and embedded-class parts, such as the Core i3-1215U (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache), offer a strong balance of performance per watt, integrated graphics and long-term supply. Lower-power Intel N-series and Celeron parts suit lightweight gateway roles, while Core i3 and i5 processors handle heavier multi-application edge nodes. Memory and storage matter too: 8–16 GB RAM is typical for gateway and HMI duties, and 256 GB to 1 TB SSDs provide space for local logging when the network is interrupted.

Applications and Use Cases

IoT embedded systems appear wherever machines need to be monitored or controlled:

  • Manufacturing — machine data collection, OEE monitoring, CNC and PLC integration over RS-232/RS-485.

  • Energy and utilities — substation monitoring, smart metering concentrators, solar inverter gateways.

  • Retail and logistics — kiosks, weighbridge terminals, cold-chain monitoring, barcode and RFID stations.

  • Building automation — HVAC controllers, access control, lift and pump monitoring.

  • Transport and infrastructure — toll systems, fleet telematics gateways, traffic signal controllers.

A common architecture is a fanless industrial PC with dual Gigabit Ethernet and multiple serial ports, running a locked-down Windows IoT or embedded Linux image, publishing data via MQTT, OPC-UA or Modbus TCP to a cloud or on-premise SCADA system.

Thinvent Products for IoT Embedded Systems

Thinvent builds fanless industrial computers, mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs designed for continuous operation in industrial and commercial environments. Thinvent industrial PCs are available with Intel Core i3-1215U processors, up to 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB SSD storage, dual Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI output and optional quad DB9 serial ports for multi-device RS-232/RS-485 connectivity. They ship with a choice of Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, Thinux™ embedded Linux, DOS or without an operating system, so integrators can deploy their own image. The ventless chassis and 12V DC input suit control cabinets, kiosks and remote sites where dust, heat and unattended operation are the norm.
