What Is an Industrial PC?
An industrial PC (IPC) is a ruggedised computer built to run continuously in environments where a standard office desktop or consumer mini PC would fail. Instead of being designed for a climate-controlled desk, an industrial computer is engineered for factory floors, control cabinets, kiosks, warehouses, vehicles and outdoor enclosures — places with dust, vibration, wide temperature swings and mains power that is not always clean. The defining characteristics are a fanless or sealed chassis, wide-range DC power input, long-term component availability, and a rich set of legacy and modern I/O rather than a thin selection of ports.
The practical difference shows up in three areas: cooling, power and connectivity. Fanless aluminium chassis spread heat passively, so there is no intake filter to clog and no bearing to wear out. Wide-input DC power (commonly 9–36 V) tolerates the sags and surges typical of industrial supplies. And serial ports, digital I/O, dual Ethernet and multiple display outputs are usually available on the same unit, which matters when the machine sits next to a PLC, a weighbridge, a barcode scanner or a legacy RS-232 device.
