Mini Itx Compact Case - Mini ITX Compact Case Industrial PCs | Fanless Mini Computers

What Is a Mini ITX Compact Case?

Mini ITX is a small form factor (SFF) motherboard standard measuring just 170 mm × 170 mm, and a "mini ITX compact case" is a chassis designed around that footprint. These cases trade expansion slots and drive bays for a dramatically smaller volume, making them ideal for space-constrained installations such as kiosks, control cabinets, digital signage, point-of-sale terminals and desktop virtualisation. The trade-off is usually cooling: a small case has less air volume, so thermal design becomes the single most important engineering decision.

Why Fanless Cooling Matters in Compact Chassis

In a mini ITX-sized enclosure, a small fan has to spin fast to move enough air, which draws in dust, adds a mechanical wear point and creates audible noise. Fanless (passive) designs instead conduct heat into a finned aluminium chassis that acts as the heatsink, so there are no moving parts to fail. This suits dusty factory floors, unstaffed kiosks, hospital and laboratory environments, and any deployment where a technician visit is expensive. A well-designed fanless mini ITX-class system typically runs reliably from 0 °C to 50 °C ambient, provided it is mounted with clearance for convection.

Specifications to Look For

Memory 4–32 GB DDR4/DDR5, often one or two SO-DIMM slots
Storage M.2 NVMe SSD, 128 GB to 1 TB
Display outputs 1–2 × HDMI, sometimes DisplayPort
Networking Gigabit Ethernet, optionally dual-port
Mounting VESA, DIN rail or wall bracket

Use Cases and Applications

Compact mini ITX-class computers are widely used as industrial control nodes, thin client endpoints for VDI and RDP sessions, all-in-one PC engines, digital signage players, and edge gateways that collect data from PLCs and sensors. Because they are small, they can be mounted behind a monitor, inside a machine panel, or on a wall where a tower PC would never fit. When choosing, match the processor to the workload: N-series and Celeron® chips for signage and thin client duties, Core™ i3 or i5 for multi-application control, vision or light analytics workloads.

Thinvent's Compact and Fanless Range

Thinvent builds compact, rugged computers in mini ITX-class form factors, including the IPC3 industrial PC with Intel® Core™ i3-1215U (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) and up to 16 GB DDR4 RAM with 1 TB SSD storage. Options include quad DB9 serial ports for legacy equipment, dual HDMI output, gigabit Ethernet, and a choice of Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 IoT, DOS, or Thinux™ embedded Linux. Alongside the IPC3, Thinvent offers mini PCs, thin clients and all-in-one PCs in fanless chassis designed for continuous operation in dust, heat and vibration.
