PC Ohne L - Fanless Industrial PCs Without WiFi for Secure Deployments

What "PC Without WiFi" Actually Means

A PC without WiFi is a computer that ships with no wireless networking hardware at all — no Wi-Fi radio, no Bluetooth module, and no antenna. Network connectivity is provided exclusively through wired Ethernet (typically Gigabit RJ45 ports), and in some designs through optional cellular or serial links. This is a deliberate engineering choice rather than a missing feature: removing the radio eliminates a whole class of security, reliability and compliance concerns.

These systems are commonly described as "wireless-free," "WiFi-disabled" or "radio-free" computers. In practice, the term covers two different things: (1) factory-configured units where the Wi-Fi module is simply never installed, and (2) units where wireless is disabled in firmware or BIOS. The first option is the stronger one, because there is no hardware present to re-enable.

Why Choose a PC Without WiFi?

  • Security: An air-gapped or wired-only machine cannot be reached over a wireless network. There is no SSID to spoof, no WPA handshake to attack, and no way for an unauthorised device to associate with it. This matters in defence, banking back-offices, laboratories handling sensitive data, and any environment where IT policy forbids wireless.

  • Regulatory compliance: Many industrial, medical and government sites restrict radio transmitters because they can interfere with sensitive equipment or because emissions must be controlled. A radio-free PC simplifies certification and site approval.

  • Reliability: Wireless links are the least predictable part of many installations — interference, roaming drops and driver issues all disappear when the connection is a cable.

  • Determinism: Wired Ethernet gives stable, low, consistent latency, which matters for machine control, SCADA polling and industrial data acquisition.

  • Longevity: Fewer components means fewer failure points, and no need to track Wi-Fi driver or firmware updates over the life of the machine.

Where WiFi-Free Computers Are Used

Radio-free PCs are standard in industrial automation (PLC supervision, HMI hosting, machine vision), banking and retail back offices, healthcare and laboratory instrumentation, government and defence installations, telecom and network management racks, and warehouse or logistics terminals where connectivity is deliberately cable-only. They are also used in EMC-sensitive test environments, where a transmitting radio would compromise measurements, and in kiosks and digital signage where a locked-down, wired-only device is easier to manage.

Choosing the Right Configuration

Start with the workload: light data-collection and thin-client tasks run comfortably on 4–8 GB of RAM and a Celeron® or N-series processor, while multi-application industrial control or virtualisation benefits from an Intel® Core™ i3 or i5 with 16–32 GB. Match the storage to your logging requirements, and count your Ethernet and serial ports carefully — a radio-free machine is usually deployed precisely because it must talk to several wired devices at once. Finally, confirm the operating system: Windows 11 Pro or IoT for standard industrial software, Linux for embedded and appliance-style builds, or no OS if you image your own stack.

Thinvent's Radio-Free Industrial Computers

Thinvent builds fanless industrial PCs and mini PCs with no Wi-Fi hardware, designed for wired-only, security-conscious and EMC-sensitive deployments. Typical configurations pair an Intel® Core™ i3-1215U processor (6 cores, up to 4.4 GHz, 10 MB cache) with 16 GB DDR4 RAM and a 1 TB SSD, powered from a 12 V 10 A adapter, and are offered with Windows 11 Professional, Windows 11 IoT Value, DOS, or Thinux™ Embedded Linux. Quad DB9 serial variants are available for installations that need multiple RS-232/RS-485 connections alongside Gigabit Ethernet, making them suitable for industrial control cabinets, secure back-office terminals and long-life embedded systems where wireless connectivity is not permitted.
